GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY
To perform and coordinate the detailed technical safety and environmental activities associated with the facility's daily functions and to head safety awareness.
DUTIES
Support plant safety compliance per regulations
Develop safety programs and policies & oversee implementation
Support plant environmental compliance per regulations
Oversee and support the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
Conduct safety and environmental training / lead and support workshops
Act as the main contact with state / federal agencies including interaction
Oversee the collection and dispersing of data reporting and develop safety policies/procedures and oversee implementation
Required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties upon request of the supervisor
Complies with the following OSHA Safety Standards:
Hazard Communication; Bloodborne Pathogens; Lockout; Permit Required Confined Space; Hot Work Permit; Powered Industrial Trucks; P.P.E. and Ergonomics
When necessary, participate in classes and training seminars to learn new technologies and techniques deemed helpful to performance on the job
Complies with company policies
Works closely with Chemical Management System to maintain compliance
Works with wastewater discharges
Works closely with Maintenance and Engineering in the development of new/modified work cells
Act as the main contact with safety investigations and work comp claims
Liaison for property insurance carrier
CLIMATE
This is an important position for service to the company and its employees. The person in this environment works at a fast pace covering multiple tasks and functions associated with safety and environmental situations. The requirements of the business and regulations may cause frequent interruptions and changing priorities. A minimum of 5-10% travel is required.

DUTIES STANDARDS
Support plant safety compliance per regulations
Support plant safety
Maintain knowledge of OSHA & MIOSHA standards and how those standards are to be applied to the facility. This includes inspection / review of new equipment and materials for the plant.
Conduct set inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
Foster effective communication between upper management, supervisors, & employees to ensure all groups are informed and working together
Facilitate safety investigations
Perform safety and ergonomic risk assessments
Provide support to APQP teams with the development of modified and/or new work cells.
Work closely with Maintenance and Engineering to assure safety work orders are completed.
Develop safety programs & policies & oversee implementation
Develop, implement and assist plant management team with strategic planning for development and use of specific awareness programs (5S, Housekeeping audits, etc.).
Monitor the results of the program using data as it is being utilized to determine effectiveness.
Chair and coordinate activities of the safety team to ensure their continued involvement in the plant.
Create policies / procedures based on the needs of the facility and audit the consistent application of these policies and procedures.
Work with plant team to gain agreement with created policies / procedures and incorporate ideas from others.
Develop training lesson plans and train supervisors so plans can be rolled out to others.
Manage workplace injuries by working with the Company's occupational health provider and Work Comp carrier to reduce recordability, lost work days and restricted activity.
Monitor and audit MSDS
Support plant environmental compliance per regulations
Maintain knowledge of EPA & MDEQ standards and how those standards are to be applied to the facility. Facilitate continued efforts in improving waste disposal.
Perform inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
Foster effective communication between upper management, supervisors, & employees to ensure all groups are informed and working together.
Works closely with MDEQ and other representatives to assure new
Oversee & support the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
Hold the position as the Environmental Management Representative and oversee all functions of the system.
Correspond with internal auditors & supervisors to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
Correspond with the audit firm that certifies the registration to correct deficiencies and to make improvements within the system.
Provide support to the Maintenance Laborers and their environmental initiatives.
Serve as a champion for the EMS initiatives.
Conduct safety & environmental training / lead & support workshops
Develop training network utilizing a train the trainer approach as needed.
Support required training of all employees in those areas where it is not applicable for supervisors to conduct.
Track training requirements and establish a training plan and regimen to meet the requirements.
Periodically audit the effectiveness of the training on the production floor.
Act as the main contact with state / federal agencies including interaction
Accompany state / federal regulators while in the plant & document activities.
Prepare & provide responses to any communication between regulatory agencies.
Act as the liaison between the regulatory agencies and the plant and establish methods for any corrective actions needed.
Works closely with MDEQ and other environmental representatives in the creation of new or modification of permits.
Oversee the collection and dispersing of data reporting
Develop data collection and information gathering for tracking progress on programs or other applications.
Foster an effective communication system through distribution of data to facility team members.
Update corporate requests with the data needed for proper reporting and updates.

Bachelors degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management and/or
3 years of experience as a Safety Specialist within an industrial setting a minimum (Background in environmental a plus)

WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office environment with no undue exposure to noise, odors, dust, drafts, etc. The job also works in plant conditions with frequent exposure (20%-50%) to noise, odors, dust, drafts, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc. Some overnight travel is required.
